Blazing Bear Homestead is a micro dairy farm located in the Town of Peshtigo, Wisconsin just up the road from the Peshtigo Harbor State Wildlife Area and the Peshtigo River Delta Marshes State Natural Area.

We keep a small herd of ADGA registered Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goats. We strive to improve our herd via selectively breeding for beautiful goats that are also great milk producers and wonderful pets. We have kids for sale in Spring/Summer and we love to help new goat owners learn how to keep and care for these awesome animals.

This technique is called an "in the pot swirl" where you pour your other colors into the base color, give it a gentle swirl, then pour into the mold all at once. Easy peasy! I poured this at a light to medium trace and the resulting swirl is wispy and gorgeous. This is goat milk soap made with milk from my Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goats and the fragrance used is Sunflower. I sell my soaps and Goat Milk Lotion on my website and at local markets in Wisconsin.

What’s going on here?
Just our chicken, Hop-Along Helen… gently pecking at Sade, one of our milking goats.
They were like this for two at least two minutes; no drama, just pure interspecies affection.

And then—right after I stopped filming—Helen laid an egg.
Right. Under. Sade. 🥚😳

We were all standing there watching like:
Is this normal??

I asked if they remember each other.
Nick didn’t even pause.
“Yeah, I think they do” he said.
Which makes sense because we got our first baby goats, including Sade, and our first chicks, including Helen, around the same time four years ago!

Maybe it’s true.
Maybe farm friendships do last forever. 💛

I can't believe how fast their first couple weeks of life flew by! This trio of trouble makers are so silly, they're sure to bring a smile.

They may look like triplets, but Cerys and Cinta are twins born from my beautiful doe Cirilla. Phinn is Peaches' baby boy. Brownie points if you can tell who's who! Cerys is a buckskin, Cinta is a cou clair, and Phinn is a chocolate buckskin (for anyone interested in Nigerian Dwarf color patterns).

The boys, Cerys and Phinn will be going to a new home together when they're old enough, and Cinta is staying here with me.

What is your favorite baby goat move? I think the one that gets me the most is the "fish out of water" jump; cracks me up every time!

Peaches' first kid is a big boy named Phinn! Of course, Peaches had to spice up the whole experience by trying to steal her friend Cirilla's kids to stall labor a little longer... and she was maybe a bit over dramatic about delivering her kid... but she's just a character like that.

As stressful as it can be, being a mid-wife to my does is one of the best part of raising goats. I can't wait to start sharing all the cute videos I'm getting of all the new baby goats bopping around and being silly, stay tuned!

My orphan bottle baby goats are 6 weeks old already and they are running amok in my house! They get outside when the weather is nice enough, but it's going to be at least a couple more weeks before they'll be able to live outside full time. Guess I'll have to enjoy this while it lasts!

You could say introductions went really well. The first warm day we had I brought my orphan house goats outside to meet the other baby goats! They were 16 days old and 9 days old respectively, even though all 5 of them were due on the same date.

I debated sharing this because it's an incredibly vulnerable moment and not a happy highlight that is expected on social media. Jewel is one of my best does but tends to take long intervals in between kids during labor, and this is the first time we've lost any. In the video I'm quick to blame myself for the 2 stillborn kids, but looking back at it now, it's more likely that they passed in utero and that is why she went into labor 8 days early. It is not a good prognosis for kids born that early.

These kids are almost 3 days old now and are eating well, playing, and taking good naps. So I'm hopeful they will be okay. I kept them with Jewel for the first day and a half and trudged through the snow every 3 hours around the clock to check on them and help the kids latch on to nurse. Jewel was not feeling well so I started her on antibiotics for retained placenta and gave her probiotics, selenium and vitamin e, and a dose of a natural anti-inflammatory. Then I pulled the kids and brought them in the house and started feeding them Jewel's milk from a bottle. Though I hope to reunite them with their mother when this awful cold snap passes and Jewel is feeling better.

All of this to say, it's not always sunshine and rainbows when you're raising livestock, especially when they are your beloved pets. While we're still grieving the loss of those two little doelings, we're going to celebrate the strength of these two that are making it. I promise, the next video will be a much happier one... and hopefully the rest of them this kidding season will be too.
